Divers at Work

Professional or occupational diving using air is conducted using either SCUBA or SSBA (Surface Supplied Breathing Apparatus) where air is supplied from the surface via an umbilical. The umbilical also carries a communications cable and a pneumofathometer which allow the diving supervisor to monitor the depth of the diver. The diver wears either a full helmet or a band mask which can supply the diver with air on demand, as in conventional SCUBA gear, or as free flow.
