Garypidae Simon, 1879

Family

Garypus californicus from Mexico (Image: M. Harvey)Synsphyronus sp. from Australia (Image: M. Harvey)Anagarypus heatwolei from Australia (Image: M. Harvey)

The composition of the Garypidae has altered radically since it was first recognized. Chamberlin (1930) included a number of genera, to which many were added by later authors. Geogarypus and its relatives were transferred to the Geogarypidae by Harvey (1986), and Larca and Archelolarca were removed to the Larcidae, leaving a compact group of genera.

Composition

The family contains 10 genera, and is defined by the absence of a helix within the spiracles.

Distribution

Garypids occur in a variety of regions in the world. Garypus is restricted to littoral habitats of many areas. Synsphyronus occurs in Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. Anagarypus occurs in littoral or coastal habitats in Australia, and islands in the Indian Ocean. Paragarypus occurs in Madagascar. A number of genera are found in Africa, usually in xeric habitats.
