World War Two firearms on display

The Western Australian Museum – Perth will showcase a large collection of rare artefacts when Battle for Australia: An Untold Story goes on display tomorrow.

WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said the exhibition tells important Australian stories about attacks, loss and sacrifice during World War Two.

“Some of the items on display include artillery and communication devices that were used in the coastal batteries of Western Australia, original uniforms, Japanese invasion currency intended for Australia, recently uncovered archival research, and two documentaries that show the mobilisation of Australian society at this time,” Mr Coles said.

The Hon Phil Edman MLC, Member for South Metropolitan Region, said he is pleased the WA Museum – Perth will host Battle for Australia: An Untold Story.

“When we ran the Restoring our History at Point Peron exhibition, people wanted the display to be open for longer so I’m grateful it will be shown at the WA Museum – Perth as well,” Mr Edman said.

“People know that Darwin was bombed, however so much more happened here: from 1942 to 1943 more than 97 air raids occurred on the Australia mainland, claiming 1,200 lives.”

Battle for Australia: An Untold Story will be on display from 18-31 May 2016. Entry is free.

This exhibition is made possible by Cedar Woods Properties Limited, Defence Housing Australia and the Western Australian Museum.
