Fireball shooting through night sky caught on camera in Perenjori

The Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder will host two events to celebrate National Science Week.

On Thursday 20 August, the WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder will open late for the Goldfields Education Mining Industry Alliance’s Science Week at Your Museum.

WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder Regional Manager Zoe Scott said the doors will re-open from 5.30pm – 7pm, especially for the free event.

“The community is welcome to visit the exhibits, and there will be a range of hands-on activities relating to mining and light for school students,” Ms Scott said.

The second event at the WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a lecture by Curtin University Geoscience Outreach Officer Jay Ridgewell called Fireballs in the Sky: Understanding the light of meteors to perfect hunting.

Ms Scott said the presentation is timely because it encourages citizen science.

“Attendees will hear how their meteor sightings, as well as images from skyward facing cameras, enable more accurate searches for fallen meteorites,” Ms Scott said.

“The lecture is a fantastic inclusion for Science Week.”

Fireballs in the Sky: Understanding the light of meteors to perfect hunting begins at 5.30pm on Wednesday 19 August. Bookings are essential via 9021 8533 or eomog@museum.wa.gov.au. Entry is by donation.
