The work of WA’s most exciting news photographers has been captured in the 2015 WA Press Photographer of the Year exhibition, currently on display at the Western Australian Museum in Perth.

WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said the Museum is delighted to host this year’s exhibition.

“This exhibition gives eyewitness accounts of this State’s major news events, sporting moments and incredible personal stories, captured by Western Australian photographers over the past year,” Mr Coles said.

“These are images of the events that shaped Western Australia and I would encourage everyone to go and see them.”

Freelance photographer Tony McDonough was crowned WA Press Photographer of the Year with his compelling image representing women taking a stand against the scourge of alcohol-related birth defects.

Organisers of the awards received 855 images from 481 entrants. The awards are divided into nine categories: Portfolio, Spot News, News Feature, Portrait, Sport, Feature, Picture Story, Suburban and Country. The overall, suburban and country prizes are judged from a portfolio of the entrant’s best four images for the year.

The winning images and those selected as finalists from each category are on display at the WA Museum until 2 June, 2015.

As well as hosting the best work of WA’s press photographers this year, the WA Museum will also host the best in the world, with World Press Photo 2015 opening to the public on 4 July, 2015.

That exhibition will showcase 200 award-winning images covering critical social and cultural issues, chosen from more than 97,000 entries from around the world.
